Club History
Geelong Gem & Mineral Club Inc. History
The Geelong and District Gem and Club was founded in 1967, following a public meeting in February, and much later on became known as The Geelong Gem and Mineral Club Inc.
Well known prominent local Jeweller, Mr Ross Scott, was instrumental in organising the formation of the club, together with some others, which culminated in the first meeting of the club, which was held on April 11th, 1967, at the Davidson Hall of the Gordon Institute of Technology.
In the period of 1967 until 1972, with the club in its infancy, an active campaign was launched to find a permanent and suitable location for the club to operate in. In this period the club had some short stints in several temporary locations, including an upstairs room above a Dentist rooms in Malop St., including holding meetings in the Geelong West Town Hall supper room, before some Nissan Huts were secured at the D.W. Hope Community Centre in Norlane, where the club successfully operated for many years.
Eventually, the then Corio Shire Council informed the tenants of the D.W. Hope Centre that the premises were to be vacated by August of 1993. This decision prompted a flurry of activity from 1990 until 1993, to secure a suitable and permanent home for the club.
Eventually a site at 18 – 20 Carey Street was identified as a location, and a lease agreement signed with the land owner. Over the years, the club had raised the sum of $70,000 in its building fund account, and when coupled with a grant from the Federal Government, the club had the grand sum of $110,000, with which it set about building the current building, with assistance from many local trades people and businesses, who had donated materials and assistance.
The first sod of the project was turned by the President at the time, My John McMahon, and the slab poured on February 10, 1993. The rooms were specifically designed for the various aspects of the lapidary and associated hobby areas, and as such have dedicated work areas for each discipline, meeting area, as well as storage areas, and ample parking space.
The clubrooms were officially opened on November 21st, 1993, and have been the permanent home of the club ever since, and the facility is possibly one of the best set up lapidary clubs in Australia, and is an achievement of which the membership is justly very proud.
